Trying to get started but just got a curve ball! - Page 2

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. The other members have given you some good advice, so I'll just say, "If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers."

As Blooie said, you can start small and add more later.  You don't need a huge area for a few hens.  Somebody may have some fencing wire and star pickets and some concrete slabs to get you started.

Do you have organisations in your town.  Over here we have the CWA.  Groups like that could be a source of some materials, if you speak to some members and explain your situation.

What are these dogs?  Are they owned by somebody, or wild?  If they are owned and are marauding around, do you have laws against that to get the dogs and owners dealt with?  Otherwise are you allowed to deal with them yourself?

I'm not sure about any organizations. I'll have to check into that. The dogs belong to my husband's family , so it's a little tricky.

It should be easier, get hubby to read them the riot act, tell them to confine them or they'll not be coming home if they come to your place.....

Seriously though, they can't be that clueless that they think you can allow dogs to run free in the country.  I am "city folk" and I know that a wandering dog who is threatening livestock can find itself dead at the hands of a farmer.  I'm a dog lover but I have no issue at all with people who make their living from stock eliminating (where they are allowed to, by law) threats to their stock.

Instead of worrying how you are going to keep the dogs out, the owners should be spending the money to keep their dogs confined to a run.
