Hands on hatching and help

Decisions, decisions....

so... I have more broodies than i know what to do with. Mostly I'm removing eggs at this point.
but... My lav orp broody was due to hatch this past weekend. She's at my farm, where i don't see her every day. So last weekend, i finally blocked her off from the others, checked her eggs, and left her with the furthest along 8 eggs (dim flashlight ugh). This past weekend was 3 weeks since i let her start keeping eggs. On Sunday, i found 3 dead chicks, pecked to death. :( so i booted her off the nest, 4 eggs remained (not sure what happened to the 8th). Drove the hour home with the 4 eggs in a butter bowl, between my thighs lol.

candled, one was a quitter, one internal pip, and 2 look a few days behind. popped them into the bator.

quick switch to OEGB broody at home. She was also due over the weekend. lifted the lid on her broody coop and she was not on her eggs and one was externally pipped! She jumped out of the coop before I saw the pip. So i took the eggs and put them with a cochin hen (one of two that had actually laid the eggs!) that had just gone broody last week. Replaced the eggs with duds from yet another broody, not knowing if OEGB would return to nest. (The cochins hatched today and yesterday, yeah!) The OEGB did return to her nest, now she is sitting on one of her own eggs (i can't even remember if it's developing or not) and a few duds.

so back to the lav eggs. The one that had internally pipped hadn't externally pipped, so i did a safety hole this morning, but it still hasn't done anything, but is still alive. The other 2 still appear to be a few days out.

Finally...the long-winded question, if anyone is still reading this blabber...Should i give the late 2 eggs to the OEGB hen?? They are pretty large for her, but now she seems so committed, and has been sitting for 3 weeks, i feel bad for her.

You could have just hit "reply" on the last post before, and it wouldn't have added it to your multi-quote ;)

I MISS THE "CLEAR THE EDITOR" BUTTON!!! :barnie

Pics are much easier now, especially multiple pictures at one time, which was impossible on mobile before.

RUBY So glad to see you back. Glad you are feeling better again!!
Thank you!! :hugs So glad to "see" you too!! Unfortunately, I can offer no advice at all on broodies because mine have always been nightmare situations with dead chicks too...BUT...

I was planning on posting that for the first time since last year I finally gave a broody 4 eggs. She's in a separate small coop/run with my nicest boy and one other very friendly girl. Just the 3 of them. But I stayed totally hands off...marked the 4 eggs, never candled once and I just check daily to see if the other girl added an egg and pull it. So I did my daily check today and lifted her butt and there was a baby! I never kept track of when I gave her the eggs but 3 weeks goes fast!! Everyone hope for me that she can be a decent mom! I only have one brooder area setup and calls eggs going into lockdown.

No helpful input but I have a question...why didn't you just put them in your bra for the ride home? Lol

Good luck! I have 4 broodies right now in my silkies and 2 in my standards....lol Not letting them keep eggs though!

Aww so glad you finally got a girl to hatch some. Good luck! And yes, the time does seem to go by faster with them than the incubator! Lol

Yea, i wish i had room for 4 lavender eggs in my bra :lau

honestly, i looked at it as kinda an experiment, because i didn't really expect any of them to make it. But the one that i put the safety hole in hadn't progressed by the time i went to bed last night. I widened the hole a little to peek in. Still saw some good veins, and a very full egg! But strong chick peeping at me. Woke this morning to a fully dry, hatched fluffy butt!! :)

That's great! That was very funny Amy & WV! When my young call duck decided to go broody I gave her a few eggs. (That turned into a nightmare too) but she would get off the nest for the longest periods of time and our weather has been very cool. I mean she would get off for hours! I did not think there would be anyway that the eggs would still be alive. And almost all of them were! It's amazing how long they stayed alive without heat.

Well, I tucked 9 chicks under a broody last night. She looks like a beautiful pancake. :D

Now... a 10th egg that showed signs of life had no external pip. Remember they were supposed to hatch Monday night but most hatched Sunday and today is Wed. So I cracked open the air pocket, thought I saw an internal pip, but it was just the shape of the sack around the chicks. Shamefully, Monday I pulled at the sack a little and saw blood so stopped. Worse than that, I tried again yesterday. Same result, some bleeding. The eggs shell is half gone where I chipped away at the air pocket previously, and the chick is very much still alive. So I know regardless if it pulls through it won't be used in my breeding program. And we tried to wait to put others under mama broody so this one would be able to get it's land legs and go with them. But at 2 or more days younger there is no way, if it does complete hatch that it could survive with it's sibblings and broody unless I tried tucking it under her several days later and she just happens to not notice the stranger. So at this point I would be looking at getting a hatchery chick to raise with it or possibly stealing back one of my broody's chicks...

Suggestions on how to proceed with the unhatched egg? It might actually be malpo, I don't know what I'm looking at even though I have a clear view inside half the egg. Could be its' beak could be a leg. It was very dry inside there, will probably bring my humidity higher than 10% next time.

A friend of mine said his grandmother used to hatch eggs inside her bra... she must of had some boosom!:) It truly is amazing how life finds a way. :pop Congrats to all you hatchers! :celebrate

I'm really surprised it's still alive. If it does hatch then I would try to put it with mom once it's eating and drinking. She has a good size bunch there, try it and observe. I don't have a lot of experience with broodies but I was watching my neighbors place for him once and a mama had left the nest with her babies but one was left behind and near dead. I did actually stick it in my bra until I got home, lol. After 2 days of care it was doing great. I put it back with mom and the babies and watched and she never even noticed. Worth a try. If that doesn't work and you had to brood it I think you had a great idea about taking one of her chicks for it.

If that egg is still alive can you post a pic?
