a few questions from a newbie

My husband and I will be building our coop in the next couple weeks, we get our chicks march 11. My husband and my father both think that for our coop (which will be a 4x4 cube style with a slanted, corrugated roof) we should use tar paper or felt roofing type material on the inside walls. We will be framing it with 2x4s, the siding will be repurposed fence boards. Will tar paper inside be ok or will the chickens peck at it and tear it? We plan to use linoleum on the floor and a 5x15x6H dog run for the run. Any thoughts or input on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

I just don't see what purpose tar paper will do myself. It could easily get punctured and otherwise I fail to see the utility myself. I would be curious as to their reasoning.

I think they wanted to use tar paper to line the inside walls to prevent drafts? I had though we would use plywood, then put the fence board siding on the outside and that would be nice and draft free. They thought the tar paper will be cheaper. I agree with you I thought it may be cheaper but wont last as long.
 
I'm a newbie also and am building my coop walls out of recycled fence boards as well (1x6 rough cut). I was wondering about the draft between the boards also. I think I'm going to add batten boards over the cracks when I'm done.(1x2 or 1x3) that should seal up the cracks to keep any unwanted drafts out.

My coop is 1x6" rough hewn boards over 2x4" framing. I added batten strips to cut the draft. I remodeled in the spring and never got around to installing half the battens. It's actually not that drafty. I'll probably eventually get around to installing them someday just for aesthetic reasons but there's no rush for me.
 
Thanks everyone, I will suggest the batten boards to my husband. Or maybe just go without and see how we do. We are not in a very cold climate, Washington state.
