I am putting it straight out there.... I am looking for approval of my chicken addition. I currently have 6 hens ranging from 2 - 6 years old. I thought I was losing one about a week ago and decided to order 3 chicks. Thankfully, my girl recovered just fine (YAY) and I am expecting the chicks in late June. I can still cancel... but boy I want those new chicks! I don't need 9 chickens!!!! I'm not sure if I want to be talked into getting more or talked out? I have the space, just no real need other than pure pleasure. Can having 3 more really hurt?

I'm not one to blindly enable, but with some of your birds being 6 years of age you may "need" these new chicks -- even if they continue on for a few more years they will not be productive during that time, so there is no harm in starting your next generation now.

Once you start with chickens, you can't really stop. I have nine as of right now, but I just want more too. I don't see how it would hurt, and it's always good to have more just in case something happens, right?

And your chickens are getting older, so it wouldn't hurt to add more new layers.

something that I've noticed about chicken keeping, you always get more than you expected, so if you only plan to have 9,and thats already a mouthful, your going to end up with more, so i don't recommend getting more, but i know what you mean, i planed on getting 3 chicks, and ended with 10! i don't know what side to pick.

I started with 4, now have 6 and will have 9. I am only going to add 3 because I think adding 3 at a time is easier when blending the flock. I put my foot down on 3!!! Under 10 isn't that bad? And my older girl is still laying pretty well. I do have two who have some egg "issues" and aren't super layers. And then I have a Cochin who, while beautiful, will be broody at least 3 times over the summer. Can you tell I'm justifying? I need to make a pro/con list. Pro - new little fluffy balls, con - 30% more poop......

I have about 63, I certainly don't need 19 more chicks and 12 hatching eggs so I'm no help, only 9, that's not enough.

What really matters is:
Do you have room for 3 more?

Chicken math should include subtraction.....if they ain't laying enough eggs to pay for their feed, they's soup!

Yep - the subtraction is the part that gets some folks. Every addition I make is made with a pre-planned subtraction---- makes you really think through each one, on both sides of the equation.
