Blooie's Blankie Fort

Well, I know a whole thread's worth of fine people who would have been abducted and dragged out here to sit on them!

Hello all Candled my remaining 26 eggs this morning day 14 1/2. For the most part they all looked good the air cells were right on target. I do have a slight question on four of them, but will let them remain until day 18 and reevaluate. I was very worried last night with extremely high winds here on the Maine coast. There was spotty power outages all over the county with tree limbs coming down, but my power never even flickered,so I lucked out this time. Lock down will be just a few days away now, will keep you posted. Happy Hatching

I got my new Brinsea today! I plugged it in and have a couple extra hygrometers in (just to keep the temps honest). My goal is to retire my LG and Incuview and use one Brinsea as a hatching incubator, and the other for the first 18 days. I'm going to have to seriously stagger batches to keep both running consistently.

I did ship off a dead baby to UC Davis today to find out why it died. I'm really hoping it was trampled, but it was one of the bigger chicks in the mix.

I'm beginning to worry about taking the chicks that the broody hens hatched and adding them to my brooder inside....

Sorry to hear of your loss. What happened that you lost her?

What breed was she? I hope you get a great hatch

Either she ate something toxic/poisonous (she was a very curious girl) or the sudden heat we got over the last two days (from a high of 60 one day and our usual weather, to over 80 the next, which is abnormally hot here) was too much for her. She was lethargic, and drank a lot yesterday, and was the same this morning. No respiratory issues or injuries. My husband went to mow the back lawn and noticed that she was face down in the dirt, not moving at noon.

She was a black sexlink Easter Egger. Most obnoxious, in-your-face personality ever. She had just two copper red feathers on the back of her head, earning the name Penny.
