This bellybutton does not look normal, right? I noticed it when I was cleaning pasty butt from this (then) 2 day old chick. I found this chick dead the next morning.

I always thought the best course of action for belly buttons was to leave them alone and keep the brooder clean (which it was... it was only on its second day!). I avoided the bellybutton to the best of my ability while cleaning off the pasty butt. I'm not sure if it is visible in the picture, but it looked like something 'granular' inside the belly button.

Anyway, wondering if I should notify the hatchery, but I'm having a hard time determining what exactly was going on here.

yeah that doesn't look right to me, was the area of her belly to bum swollen and softer than it should be? I would definitely send this pic to the hatchery and ask them what they know about it, give them all the information you have, the day you got the chick, the day it died, the conditions of the coop, where you got the chick etc. The yellow color of the down and belly button is a little concerning also, did you put anything on the belly button or did the chick come looking yellow there? Regardless, I would definitely email the hatchery, there may be something going on that they should know about within their own facility.

Thanks for the reply. Pretty sure the yellow on the down was from cleaning the poop off of the chick's vent. I'm glad I took the picture, I think I will send it along to the hatchery. I just wanted to check about the belly button this g because I've never paid much attention to bellybuttons before.
