Chickens in the garden

We are thinking of doing chickens in the backyard. We also have a garden. If we didn't pen them up would they peck our vegetables and plants?
 
They will quickly destroy all gardens by digging, scratching and pecking. You will need a fence around your garden. Mines only two foot tall and the chickens don't hop over it, but I do have lots of land for them to range on.
