I had one 3 year old hen die a few weeks ago and I'm not sure why. She appeared to have some internal issue, as a few weeks prior to her death she laid the oddest egg I had ever seen. It was about 2 " wide and 4 " long, bread-like texture for the shell, and hollandaise looking yolk. She became listless over the course of a few days and then died. My first hen and it was a sad day... Now I have another hen from the same batch acting the same way. She has not laid an egg, odd or otherwise. So I am wondering - I live in WI, and now that the days are longer and the hens would normally be gearing up to laying, have these two hens had something go haywire inside and they can't pass an egg and it is slowly killing them? I'm at a loss as to what to do for this one that is going through this now, so any advice would be much appreciated. I do not believe it is any sort of illness. I have 6 other 1 year old hens that are laying eggs every day and are very healthy. It's just the older ones that are having a hard time. They are Gold Star/ Isa Brown if that matters. Thank you!
