Help! I've lost two babies

We got 6 ducks about 4 weeks ago, last week while my SO was out of town I came home to one dead in the corner of the pen. No body parts out of the fence no evidence of anything trying to get in but her neck was pretty matted up. I can home today to another one dead

she was fully laid out and again her neck was very matted no evidence of injury. Anyone have any idea what may have happened/gotten to them? I'm so upset. They were both the same coloring too. I'm sure that has nothing to do with it but never know. They were gray babies but Rouen/mallard from TS. None have appeared injured all have been eating and drinking normally and are active.
They were both next to the pool when I found them. I have witnessed them easily get in and out of the pool with and without the steps we have provided.

Sometimes a snake will kill a bird and try to swallow it. If the bird is too large, the head and neck area will become moistened and matted down. Not saying this is what happened to your ducks, but it is a possibility.

I did wonder that the first time and it makes sense I'm just not sure how I would keep them out...
 
Not yet. I put sulfer around their pen based on what I could find online as deterrents. Fingers crossed it keeps them away. My SO found a 5-6ft skin by our garden today

They are kept inside at night so I think that keeps down the predators for now. We are planning to dig down a bit around their pen and bury some fencing. Fingers crossed our snake days are over
 
I am glad you asked this because I learned something new! I don't think we have snakes around here but it sounds like that is something you have to watch out for where you live. I would not have recognized a snake kill but now I know what signs to look for if we ever do have snakes near our birds.
