August 2016 Hatch-A-Long

I have 2 silkies hatched and waiting on the other 2

a white (looks grey) and a black

Question: The one that was born earlier this morning has a bare belly and her left foot stays curled up, why? The one that is the youngest by about 9 hours has fluff cover her entire belly and much stronger with both feet working right.

Final pic of the bunch.

I still can't figure out what is going on with the one pearl's eye- whether it's out or just swollen. It's very milky and was bleeding and weeping but that has stopped.

Now, to figure out colors and who I'll keep, and list the rest for sale. I have 14 non pearl/pied to choose from.

You may need to tape the foot. I had to tape a chick's for a day and after that she could walk fine. She's still a runt, though. Lol

Thank you I did look it up and taped and took care of spayed legs....but both are slipping fast. I don't understand why since they were doing so well just 10 minutes ago. It's like they are gasping for air, we are all rubbing them. Temp under lamp reads 101.3 which is where they were, in a large aquarium. They were both born a day early, but I don't know if that has anything to do it.

So sad

I need to figure out what happened or what I can do before the other 2 hatch. Should I have added humidity to the brooder?

For one thing that is very hot. Especially in an aquarium. Humidity doesn't need to be added to the brooder. They may have defects or something may be up with your setup.

What are the symptoms? Just gasping? Are they able to walk?

101 after hatch is to hot. If they are under the light they may be to hot could be why they are gasping for air. The temperature after hatch should be 95 then drop it by 5 degrees every week.

Ok, so 95 for the silkie chicks? Should I set up in a brooder box instead of the giant aquarium? And if i use a box, do I still turn the lamp down to be 95?

Heat at the chicks level should never be higher than 95. They also need a cooler spot in the brooder they can escape to if they start to over heat. They will find the temp they need between the two. Also don't put the food and water in the hottest or coolest part of the brooder. I agree with two J farm, drop the heat by 5* every week until they start to really feather out and no longer need heat during the day. I've found that silkied chicks do best if you still provide heat at night until they are a bit older than you would normal stop for a smooth feathered. This could mean bringing them inside at night or providing supplemental heat at night in the coop.

How are your little ones doing?
