Watering my birds

I ordered some too. I did manage to get them to stop crapping and kicKing litter into their waterer though. I made a 6' tall cylinder of chicken wire around it. They can't get above it or get their backs to it. I made larger holes in the wire so they could get their head in there.

I love the horizontal nipples. They work great. I put mine in a regular 5 gallon bucket. I zip tied a funnel to the lid to keep the bone heads from sitting and pooping on it. Works great. I installed an electrical outlet right by the waterer for the bucket heater.

I am trying the vertical nipples in a 5 gal bucket, however after two day the girls have not figured out that water is inside. I have tried putting blueberries on the nipple to entice them but no success. Any suggestions.

I used the vertical nipples before. The bucket got to be too small for the number of birds I have and filling it every day was a pita. Plus I needed a way to keep it thawed in the winter. To get them to realize there's water in it, you have to catch a chicken* take it to the waterer and use its beak to depress the nipple and let the water drip onto its beak. Do that for 2 or 3 of them and they will come back to it for water. The rest of the flock will learn from them. Mine had all figured it out in an hour.

* One of my favorite lines from a movie is when Micky is training Rocky to become a faster moving fighter. He tells Rocky he has to catch a chicken. He says "if you can catch dat chicken, you can catch greased lightening!"
