Vet says gapeworm, recommends unavailable treatment; options?

I don't think it's gapeworms.

-Kathy

I did two things and now I have to pick an option:

1. Talked to a vet an hour from me who says I can either come in there and he'll likely give me Baytril for an UPPER respiratory infection, or I can get tetracycline and give that to her with a syringe to assure the correct dose.

2. Talked to a vet on "Just Answer" who suspects a LOWER respiratory infection and suggests daily Tylan-50 injections for 5-7 days (gulp!), but who said Baytril would be better than tetracycline because it's broader spectrum.

So now I'm trying to decide whether to drive an hour to the Baytril vet or give the tetracycline a try. Nothing can ever be easy!

Did either vet see the videos of her? Did the "just answer vet" warn you about the possibility of injection site reactions when giving Tylan? If she were mine I would take her to an avian vet.

I decided to take her to the vet an hour away (large animal vet that also sees chickens and is the one and only option today). I will blame myself if I just do the easy thing (tetracycline) and she dies. This way if I lose her, it won't be because I didn't do everything I could for her. At least now I know better questions to ask, and to push for appropriate tests if they aren't offered.

Did you search for an avian vet using the links I sent? I think it's more important to find an avian vet. A large animal that sees chickens is better than nothing, but an avian vet will know more about birds and chickens because that's their specialty. I strongly suggest that you find an avian specialist instead.

Thanks, Kathy. I'm looking now. I'd called for an appointment before I saw your links, but they just called me back and said they can't see her until next week, either. So I was about to update with "tetracycline it will have to be and I'll just have to hope" but now I'm going to see what I can come up with.
