Hi chicken peeps! Can someone please tell me at what temperature we should put heat on in coop. It's suppose to drop into the teens tonight and then negative temps tomorrow. Thanks

You should never put heat in the coop, aside from a heated waterer if necessary. Make sure they're well ventilated and that the roosts are wide enough that their toes lay flat on them (so they can snuggle their feathers over them to prevent frostbite) and they will be fine.

Thank you! People keep saying we have to heat coop and everything I've read says not to unless it goes into negative temperatures. Only door we leave open is the one to the run that's fully enclosed with fencing. Big doors we close and latch shut at night. Now they're starting to fight and peck at each other cause not going outside in yard. I even shoveled part of the coop yard but they still won't go out!

Pyxis and Percheron chick have given you some good advice. If the birds are getting "bored" from being kept in, try some boredom busters (you'll find ideas by putting that in the Search box).

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome!

Hailing from Aus, I am more qualified to advise on whether to add air conditioning or not but I see that you have already received some great advice so I will just add that I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

How old are your chicks? If they are fully feathered out, they should be able to adjust to lower temps. You could try giving them real tree branches to explore in their run, or some parrot toys to amuse them.

Re-reading your intro, I'm wondering how many chickens do you have and how large is your coop? How much roosting space do they have? Some idea of your set up (or a picture) could be helpful.
