I have a tom turkey that I raised since he was 2 days old and a hen and they are tame and follow me around but the other day I fell in the yard and my blue heeler dog came over to me and when I got up my tom turkey started being aggressive to my dog not only that dog but the other 2 I have also. What can I do about this? I don't know if he thinks the dog has hurt me and keeping them away from me or what. Any suggestions would be appreciated. bndck316

When my husband goes out to butcher one of the turkeys he usually shoots it first. Immediately after the turkey goes down the other turkeys will attack it if it's in the run with them, and it can be hard to get them away. Turkeys will actually attack anything that is down. So I assume your dog actually kept you from being jumped on by your turkey. Turkeys actually seem to enjoy getting into fights and get excited by anything resembling one. That's my guess.

Maybe you are right but that was on Wed. and he is still after my dogs. It is every time I am around he runs the dogs away from me.

Turkeys are feeling feisty this time of year. They can be relentless when they get an idea in their heads or decide they don't like something. Another reason mine are penned up unless I want them out. Hopefully he doesn't hurt your dogs or vice versa. I always say turkeys are goofy.

Well mine are not in a pen only at night he has been raised with these dogs and it's funny that he just started . He has a hen but he protects like he does her..
