Coop for 10-12 chickens

Depends much on climate and flock demeanor....and, yes, run space and how much shelter it provides during inclement weather.
Interior coop height and how that space is built out is a good point too.

With my climate and run...I wouldn't put more than a dozen in an 8x8 coop.

how would the climate affect the space they require? I live in a really hot area and im curious if I should stick to the 4sq/f per chicken ratio.

Quote: Well, for me where the weather is nasty and frigid most the winter....my run is not protected so that means they stay in the coop most the time, so I go with 8 or more sqft per bird in the coop for winter.

In a hot climate you best have excellent ventilation in coop for comfortable night time security.
Taller coop with big vents up high and lots of roost length so they can spread out to cool off.
Or even an open air type coop, where more secure but open walls are the focus.

Lots of variables and options.

Heres a picture of mine before I painted it. A friend and I built it. Its' 6x8 with 7 foot walls, 9 foot at the peak. I had the windows given to me but besides that I built it (coop only, no run etc.) for $300.00. I found the wood siding on sale at Menards. I went with 6x8 so there would be little scrap. 1 1/2 sheets of 3/4 plywood for the floor, a load of 2x4's. I also had a friend donate the metal for the roof from a barn he tore down. You can definitely build a good size coop on a budget if you have the basic skills. The scrap 2x4's and siding were used to build the nest boxes.

My link to the photos is not working, ill see if I can find some.

Mine is the bottom right hand corner photo, cant get a direct photo to link for some reason.

I have 9 hens but it could hold a few more.
