I have got 3 RIR hens(they are right at 1 yr old) and one of them is laying an egg about the size of a quarter. She has laid two of them in the past 2 weeks with normal size eggs in between. The other 2 are laying normal size eggs daily. I am feeding Tucker Millings 22% Super layer pellet with treats of crickets and cabbage once a week. There has been no trauma or excitement that I know of. Why do ya'll think this is happening?

The usual cause is a bit of tissue breaks off of the oviduct lining and the hens body processes it like a real egg, sometimes it's just a small bit of yolk, and others it's an actual tiny yolk. Since the center is so small the rest of the egg is as well.

It's usually considered a glitch in the system and isn't anything to worry about. It's seen more in hens that are starting up laying or when they are shutting down in the fall.
