Puffy or Swollen Eye on 10 Week Old Ameraucana Mix -- Need Advice

Hi all,

We're completely new at all of this. One of our favorite chickens has a puffy eye. She/he is a 10 week old Ameraucana mix from our neighbors hatched out chickens. We noticed her/his eye puffy yesterday and reading another thread here rinsed it with saline solution. It appears to be about the same today. The chicken seems to be acting normal otherwise, running around the run this morning.

Is there anything else we should do?

Can you take her to a vet?
Does the eye have a discharge?
Any other symptoms - sneezing, coughing, mucous from the nostrils,etc. ?

It's so hard to know the cause of swelling of the eye/face unless it's accompanied by other symptoms. Check inside her beak to make sure it's clear of any obstructions (see this https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1074036/sinus-infections)

Continue to flush the eye with saline and you can apply some Terramycin eye ointment or Vetericyn eye gel to the eye.

No other symptoms, but will look in her mouth
 
Thanks again for the reply. We rinsed again with saline and it seems to be looking better. Sorry for the stupid question --- do chickens react to insect stings? We seem to have a lot of wasps and other inscets that sting in our yard at the moment.
 
Call around to farmer's coops and farm supply stores until you find one that sells Terramycin antibiotic eye ointment, and powdered antibiotics that can be added to water. Camping Survival dot com sells bird antibiotics. I can tell you the terramycin is usually more likely found at stores that deal more with cows and horses.

Yes, they can react to insect stings, especially to "vunerable" areas like the face, comb and wattles that have little or no feathers. It's possible the facial swelling could be from a wasp sting. I'm glad that she seems to be doing better after rinsing/flushing with saline.

My 3 week old chick had a swollen eye yesterday and has no other symptoms. Today it looked WAY worse and I separated her from her sisters. She is alert, eating, drinking, sweet as pie. I looked all day for terramycin and even drove over an hour to a place who said they had it and they did not. I flushed it with allergy saline solution as suggested by two people. It did not appear to hurt her. It looks like a swollen tear duct or something in mine. I truly hope it clears up for both of our girls. If you find out any news can you post on my forum question (Baby chick with swollen eye)...
