So what will kill worms, and in your opinion are some of these natural preventatives even sufficient?DE is hype and wont prevent nor kill worms. VermX, garlic, cayenne pepper and pumpkin seeds might help as preventatives, but wont kill worms. It's unlikely you'll see worms in poop, why should they detach themselves from the host? If you see any, it's because your chicken has an infestation internally and are overloaded, no place to go but out. They will be dieing because they cant survive outside the host.
Use sugarcane vinegar if available. Here in India it is very cheap. Just put it infront of them like water. They'll drink it.What are some ways that you can worm chickens and still get eggs to eat from them. I read something about putting dried garlic in thier water. Thanks
Gasping and wheezing can be either gapeworm or a respiratory illness. For the former, use molly's herbals formula #1 at double the dose. For the latter, keep with the garlic and include lots of healthy, easily digestible foods. Also include fermented feed or other ferments such as yogurt for at least one meal/day - for humans, 80% of the immune system is in the gut so I imagine it's the same for animals as well.
A note on molly's: I am right now treating a severe (bright bloody poops) case of coccidiosis in my week-old Cornish x and 2-week-old heritage chicks. Even after just one dose (one tbsp in feed for 37 chicks) ALL were back to normal, healthy poops! I don't know about its effectiveness on gapeworms, but the active compound is delivered through the bloodstream so it will get into those worms as well, but perhaps in lower amounts as compared to intestinal worms.
There are many "weeds" which can treat various other diseases. Dead nettle works on pneumonia and bronchitis, mullein cures mycoplasma... do some researching and see what kind of medicine you have growing in your yard that you can feed to your hen or make tea out of (if she won't eat them).
You need the wormwood formula #1 for active infestation. Coccidiosis is actually a microscopic parasite, probably why it can be treated by both worm meds and antibiotics. Fyi, my chicks that i hatch from my own flock no longer get it - they are born immune! Thanks Phoenixxx for the Molly's link. I was at a goat farm once as a wwoofer and the woman there used it to de-worm her goats. I didn't realize that you could use it on chickens.
So it's a de-wormer but you're also saying that it cured your chicks of coccidiosis? Wow that's great. Does the website claim that it does that or did you just try it on your own? Oh is cocci a worm? Anyways thanks for the tip. Btw- which formula did you buy? There were so many options.
I did, but i find myself forgetting to use it so i can't make any claims to its efficacy. We live in busy times - i keep winding up in jobs i don't want, working all kinds of ungodly hours... add to that a lazy streak and stuff doesn't get dealt with until it's CLEAR that it needs dealing with, lolDid you buy formula #2 as well- the weekly treatment?
