I have found a way to make something good from my barred rock hens. I have a extra welsummer rooster.
I'm going to put him in with the barred hens to make a black sex link cross.
Should make very nice chickens and great layers.
Wish me luck in about 3 to 4 weeks I'll have eggs.

Cute babies; should be killer egg layers. So if they should be black sex linked, does that mean the brown ones are boys? It looks like some of the black babies have white spots on their heads; I think those would also be boys.

It will be interesting to see how they grow out.

We think they are really cute! They are very bright eyed and energetic to be only a few hours old.
My understanding is that the brown ones are pullets and the black/white ones are cockerels.
If I remember right I will need to cross the cockerels back to Welsummer hens for the next step to Welbars. Don't hold me to any of this though cause it all swirls in my head sometimes.

By the way how's your blue egg project going. I remember you have some BEAUTIFUL Blue Barred Rocks that I hope to talk to you about sometime.
 
Im not sure how the barring works when crossed with a color like welsummers are. It will be so interesting to see how they grow out. Do all the black chicks have white spots on their heads?

Still working on the blues, its a lot of fun. Now that I have a dozen or more blue girls, Im working on breeding better type, larger size, better lacing. So Im "culling" some blue girls, which isnt culling at all, they are either being sold, or they can stay in the community coop.

Keep us posted on how those babies grow. They should be wonderful layers.
 
Since your BR is the hen, all the males will be barred and the females mostly solid. That's all I know, never made that particular cross. Not sure how the sort of partridge will play out in there. I'm thinking the black ones with the spots are your males.
 
Very cute babies, thats interesting you got brown chicks.
I'm going to hatch some as soon as the bator in free lol.
The welbar cross will take some time I'm thinking about it my self.
Any one want to try this cross I have eggs ready.
I would of thought all the chicks would of been black.

We wound up with 10 brown pullets and 8 black cockerels.
We hope to keep the pullets to see how they turn out and what the egg color is like.
We'll grow out the cockerels to get the three best roos. Most likely a few will begin to show decisive form and temperament early enough to thin them down before finishing them out completely.
I think these are going to make really nice birds.
