Why is it so hard to find white orp's? The only place I can find them is McMurry, and I'd have to buy 25 birds min. Anyone know of anywhere else I may find them with a lower min. order?

I seem to see a lot of people asking after White Orps these days.
Gayle of Catalpa farms in IL used to breed them. I've an idea she might have sold them on but I don't know. I wrote & asked her last night but have not yet heard back. I know a few other people with whites but I think they're still chicks so I don't suppose they'd have any to sell as yet.
Looks like white Orps are the colour of the moment.

Perhaps it's time to make some new lines. Who's up for making white orps? Easy project.

Whites are the rarest of an already rare breed in Orpingtons. I know of maybe 4 reputable breeders. And of those only one or two sell to the public. I like Catalpa Farms, Gayle was very helpful to me when I called asking for Blacks. I don't have any Whites YET.

I'd have to say that so far they are just inconsistant! I was looking forward to whites, ordered them from everywhere.. have 32 now and 5 more coming, but I have changed my mind.

They don't come out consistantly, they have off colors to their down, sometimes the legs are dark instead of light. I'ts some kind of Recessive/Dominant thing with the white. White is not a color so there is apparently a lot of variation possible.

I am simply finding it frustrating to figure out what will come out of the breedings, and any that come out with the wrong color legs due to their recessive white gene, are useless for showing! I just don't know.. it's not what I expected. Breedings will yeild a lot of useless stock, and I really don't have the time or space or money to feed something that won't produce reliable offspring.

I'm selling off most all the whites I aquired already. I have 3 week olds from McMurray in the brooder, all for sale!

One of the women here went and bought chicks at tsc for a $1.89 and then was selling them on craigslist for $5. Maybe you ought to order your 25 and then sell the rest rest on craigs. I do notice alot of chicks for sale here. Mostly rir's. They're so common, I'd expect White orps to go fast. She had lavender orps. and if I wasn't full I would have bought a couple.

I know next year I might try it with other less common breeds, like silkies and EE's, as part of an order for the ones I want but don't want 25 of.

White just doesn't seem to be a popular color, which is why there seems to be few working on them. I've even found that to be true with white araucana. Not so popular because people are afraid they will get dirty or are easily picked off by predators. I think the white orp is just majestic and quite appealing to look at. I agree with Krys, they are not hard to make. I think some of the inconsistencies folks are seeing is due to the wrong matchups producing wrong pigmentation on the shanks. Work with white skinned birds instead of black and you should get there fairly easy.

Dawn, don't be so quick to give up hope. Keep your nice typey, white skinned birds and keep at it. You will have to cull for what you want, but you can get there. I wouldn't fret so much over down color. As long as the birds feather in proper white, that is what's important. Continue culling for leaky color on plumage and you can get to a nice clean flock.

I also read a "rumor" perhaps, or maybe it's true.. that feeding corn to white orpingtons (and possibly all white birds) creates yellow plumage.

Anyone know if that is true?

added: thanks Jodi. I am keeping some of the ones from Gilman farms and the ones from Sandhill to grow out a while... so maybe next year I'll have a go at it, if what I have left is any good. But I thought it would be a simple breeding and not so complicated before I ordered everyone. I just have to focus on my gold lace project right now and housing two family lines seperately. Who knows what the future will bring on that project.

so if anyone nearby wants my McMurray whites... I've got a bunch left, mostly females. Will post this in BST soon.
