I want to encourage everyone working with blacks to try a few generations of black on black breeding, without using any blues. I have been very impressed with the color saturation on many of the blacks I have been raising this year. Here is a picture of a pullet from a Feb hatch of a black Amy Jo Piehl cock over black hens. The black is very deep and there is no trouble in distinguishing them from any of the blues from the blue/splash pen:
black cockerel from April hatch of black-on-black breeding:
even with my horrible flash photography, the color isn't washing out much.
Compare to a blue showgirl (may hatch) cockerel that I have for sale... same background, photo taken same time, same flash (just cropped photo)- this bird is a relatively deep blue, not a blue black, but not a light blue. Just to show how dark the blacks are in comparison- the flash even washed out the skin coloration a good bit.
So, really, if you like blacks do try some black-on-black breeding. black silkies can be one of the most stunning colors when they are really deep black. Another May hatch cockerel.
Come over to the dark side! Even when they are gangly teenagers (which the birds above still are) they are so cute. The best thing? They are calm and gentle. They are laid back.
Me, Sugar Baby and Puddin are gettin ready for show season!!!!!
My granddaughter is very excited this year...she has some great silkies and OE to enter this year!
This is my granddaughter, Jessica and her friend Tyler(her grandmother is BYC member, sugarsandfarm) They did great at the Newnan, Georgia show last year.
Question for all of you silkie owners. I would love to try my hand a breeding but was wondering is there any place that might list what to look for in breeding/show silkie quality? I am still in the thinking stages on this and want to learn as much as possible before attempting this. I know a beautiful silkie when I see one but I really dont know what to look for or what is desired in the breed. I tried to google info but I couldnt really find anything. Thanks!!!
You can get the APA or the ABA Standard of Perfection book. It comes in hard or paperback. The best thing to do is to get this and study it. Or you can go to the American Silkie Bantam Club and the standard is posted there. One thing to remember,,,,,once you get just one silkie, it doesn't stop at that!!!!!LOL
