They alway lieve the work to the grandma's. Old people are the same..... They just keep on raising kids untill they can't no more.

I have several hens that were born in March 2007, and then the rest of my hens, and my rooster, I received from someone in 2006. I have no idea how old they are as they were all mutt adults when I got them, but my poor rooster is looking a little arthritic. I wonder how long they live, and how long they can actually fertilize eggs. (One reason I am hoping for a new rooster this year out of the babies I have, docile please) as I want to start hatching my own eggs.

Here is a previous discussion on it...

There was a member on here, haven't seen a post by her in awhile, but I think she's still around...I BELIEVE it was Aussiesharon, but I'm not completely sure...anyway, she had a hen that lived to be over 15 and she posted quite a bit about her, with pics & such. She passed away and there's a thread where the owner paid tribute to her...it was very touching. Sounded like a very special hen.

The oldest chicken I've had lived to be 10-1/2 years old. Right now I have a hen that is 10 years old and broody. Yep! She's been happily sitting on some plastic eggs the last two weeks, and when the baby chicks I ordered come in next week, I'll slip them under her. She shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon, either. My oldest egg-layer laid for 6-1/2 years.
