I have my first batch of 15 Australorp chicks in the brooder right now:D. I plan to keep about 6-7 chickens for eggs. They sure seem to be burning their way through the first 25lb bag of crumbles. How many pounds of feed does an average chicken go through in one week? Or I guess maybe I should ask how many 50lb bags will I need to buy in a month for 6 chickens?

During the winter when the flock can't free range, I go through 100lbs of layer mash per month for 14 hens. During the summer when the birds would rather eat live feed that they find, I prolly only go through 50lbs in 6 weeks. They are always fed free choice as much as they care for.

I think, if my mental calculations are correct, that a 50 lb bag lasts me about 6 months per chicken. (So for 6 chickens it oughta last one month). Mind, I'm not making any enormous effort to avoid waste or loss to occasional mice, but otoh the girls do also get various table scraps, bugs in summer, etcetera so it may even out.

I have 6 banties and 16 standard adults. They go though 50 lbs in two weeks, with about one bowl of left overs a day and free range over a few acres from sun rise to sun set.

for my 12 pullets around 15-20 weeks old I go through around 1 and 3/4 back of layer feed/ Starter in a month in the summer I think this should decrease I am also getting rid of 3 hens and possibly getting 3 more chicks to replace them.

:DThank you all so much. You gave me a great idea of what to expect in the feed bill. All your helpful answers also gave me a great idea for what size feeder I will need to buy. Thanks again
