Blood spots in duck eggs.

It's probably way to early to worry about this.  My Welsh Harlequins just started laying on Saturday.  I got 3 eggs today.  I've only eaten the eggs twice so far, and both times one of the eggs had a rather large blood spot.  I eventually would like to sell the eggs and I'm sure this is a turnoff.  Is this a random thing, or will some ducks have blood spots in their eggs regularly?

It can often happen when a bird is new to laying- or has just started again after a break.   Blood spots occur when either a bit of tissue or blood is released along with a yolk.   If it doesnt settle within a few weeks it could indicate a different issue - but it sounds unlikely as the duck has laid such a small number of eggs so far.

We call that a "rooster's foot" in Germany.  It usually is only found in young birds.  It happens when the follicle breaks free from the ducks ovary.  It actually also happens in humans.  It's a normal process.  Nobody knows why some birds get it and other don't.  I know what you mean with selling those eggs to customers.  Good news is that is can be seen when you candle the egg, so you can sort them out.  That is what the industry has been doing for years, so people may freak when they see it in an egg because they don't know that it is quite common.
