Huskies and chickens

I have both chickens and a husky. I also have a German shepherd. I agree with the comments that a husky does not make a good first time dog. They have tons of energy. They are very smart but if you don't keep them busy, they will find trouble. They are predators by nature and are NOT good with chickens. If we are with the husky he will leave them alone, but I would never trust him alone with them. He would kill them in a heartbeat. Our shepherd, however, is great with them and will even help us herd them when they try to wonder off. I would really reconsider your choice. If you get a husky, you must be very strict and show you are the alfa. Make sure your chickens are secure. Remember, huskiness not only jump over a fence, they will try to dig under the fence.

I think with the proper socialization and training it's very possible.......

I am curious to see if you ever got a dog, I mean if the family did. I have a pyr and he takes care of us and the chickens, peacocks and loves the cates. They are very good looking dogs too, and they require training, but once finally trained you can usually trust them with your birds, or even to protect them as many do. Mine would also be very happy playing with family. He used to jump on the sled with my stepson and absolutely loves the snow!
I hope your family knows/remembers what puppyhood is like, almost all go through chew up everything phase, the bigger the pup the bigger the stuff they chew sometimes. Forget nice or expensive furniture, etc.
I love mine, and I wouldn't have 2 bird left if it weren't for him keeping Hawks and coins at bay but he was s handful as a pup for sure!

I just lost 16 out of 17 pullets due to very trained six year old Husky who had never killed anything. they were in a huge screened in area in the garage. I was working on their new home at the barn, people were in the house. I found her and the 16 dead, she ate nothing. I also found the one that got away, she now likes to be held. I still do not know how she got them. She is high maintenance, walked or bicycled daily. The chicks raised from birth or gone, I went and bought 11 more same aged for my sad chick. As I write this they are all becoming friends and I am trying to mourn my chicks which I named and never intended on eating and forgiving my dog. Dogs and chickens really do not mix. Especially Huskies.

Huskies and Malamutes have a very high prey drive. They are great dogs but I have yet to find one that could be trusted around livestock or poultry. German Shepherds can be trouble too.

I have a 3/4 malamute 1/4 husky male who is now 4. When he was 2.5 yrs, we got 3 chickens when a neighbor could not keep them anymore and begged us to take them. Chicken is our mals very favorite food so I was worried. We also have 2 cats he does well with. I tried to read up on how to train malamutes to not eat or harm chickens and I did not find one single article saying it would work. They ALL said "not going to happen. The instinct is too strong". But all dogs have their own personality and his personality is so sweet and not like any of the other 5 puppies he was raised with so I felt there was hope.

I read up on how to train dogs with chickens and worked with him for 3 weeks. Conclusion is that our chickens have their pen area but I also let them free range in our large back yard. The dog, chickens, and cats all spend time out there together and there is no aggression at all and we have not always been around to watch over them either. They all leave each other alone. I am just saying that it is not impossible but it is not the norm either. I let him into their pen also because we get the occasional mouse and he is loves to go after those but ignores the chickens.

When the cats and chickens are out, I love to keep him out there cuz he is not happy with the neighbor cats who try to come near them. We don't see them much anymore. People really are amazed when they see the critters all out together. I trained him myself and he listens to me and knows I am the alpha in our home. That may be why or I just got lucky.

WhoopiePie did you ever get that husky? Our husky has killed at least 4 chickens and two ducks. He didn't eat them, it was just the thrill of the very short chase. I honestly think that it's not even an intentional kill, he just grabs them like he grabs his 2x6 board he plays with. He's on a zip line and if they cross his path he's after them. It's gotten down to putting him up when the chickens are out, there's very little compromise here. Even though he has been disciplined for killing them his predatory nature takes over. He's very sweet otherwise but as others have said he's very high energy and will not come back if he gets loose. The only way we catch him is to get in a vehicle, pull up in his vicinity, open the door and ask him if he wants to go for a ride. He loves to go for a ride. He will go to strangers though so we have our name and number on his collar. As much as we love him the regret level for getting him is pretty high.

We've got two 10 month old Golden Retrievers and my parents 5 year old Black Lab and we haven't had any trouble. Even when they get loose and the dogs are outside. They just watch the chickens roam until I get them back in the run.
