What is a civil union?

It is pretty much a marriage. It is designed to give same sex partners the same legal rights as a heterosexual spouse would have. Inheritance, medical decisions, property rights, etc....

civil union is a legally recognized union but not necessarily a recognized marriage. Now in NY, marriages of the same sex will be legally recognized.

ETA--Friends of my were legally married in Vermont 2 years ago, but the state of NC doesn't recognise same sex marriages.

Only thing is the legal rights are limited. I can't put her on my insurance at work as of yet. I am checking things out as how far the civil union act extends. The HR person at work hasn't got a clue and the insurance company says "no way".

Thanks! We just wanted everyone to know it's not just for gay couples. We were able to get him on my insurance this way without going through the whole marriage thing

Very true. My boyfriend and I (I'm a girl) considered it since neither of us are big on the culture of marriage, but they are not recognized by all states or offered in our state, so we went for a civil service wedding. I do not look at marriages and civil unions as being the same thing, and find it creates a rather uncomfortable "separate but equal" way of thinking on top of the rights not translating in all areas or even having all the rights of marriage.
