How small of an area can a squirrel get through?

I am going to use pallets for a foundation in my new coop and am wondering if squirrels could get through some tighter ones and eat chicken food.
 
I regularly see them go through a chain link fence as if there's nothing there and I know they can squeeze through smaller openings than that. Anything a little bigger than their head, they can get through.
 
About the size of a quarter if you can drop a quarter through a hole (flat ways) the hole is big enough for most rodents. (nickle sized holes are big enough for young rodents and all mice)
