Good for your son!! It will be an interesting project.I have had some develop fast and they usually are cockerels. It will be interesting to watch his documentation and see the results. He should also track one with a smaller comb to see if , when and how it grows. How soon can comb development start on silkies roosters and pullets? I have a little three and half week old who has more comb than any of my other silkies, including the two month old. Everyone else is flat and this one has a bump starting. My thirteen-year-old son, who's very scientifically minded, is documenting the chick's comb development through pictures and whether it turns out to be male or female. Here's the first of many pictures this chick's going to have to put up with. It really doesn't like holding still.
Looks like the top of the comb is getting red/mulberry, and itdoes seem to be kind of bumpy for 11 weeks. Combine that with roostery behavior and it's probably a boy.Ok so I thought this Silkie was a Girl, but Now i'm wondering if shes a Roo.. She is the smallest of the 3 that i got at the same time, they are 11 weeks old, ones a girl, ones a roo, and this one I thought was a girl, but now butting heads with the roo, and i looked at this closer and seemed to be growing.. .. Does anyone think this is a Roo?

The legginess, stance and wide comb make me think cockerel. My boys have all gone thru this awkward, gawky stage so I vote boy.
