Golden Comets

I have a mixed flock. 3 of my chickens are golden comets. They lay eggs everyday. They are very sweet and friendly to all animals. In my flock I have golden comets, barred rocks, bantam Cochins, bantam Brahmas, and one welsummer. They do peck at the bantams occasionally but nothing to cause damage. They are good free rangers, cold and heat hardy, good foragers, and very easy to hold. I got mine from craigslist mostly, but some also came from some local bird swaps. If you don't know what a bird swap is it's a gathering of people where they will sell or trade goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, guineas, quail, pheasants, and sometimes peacocks. The prices are usually good. Alot of the people are just trying to get rid of the chickens so they are relatively cheap. I was able to get one cohcin bantam, two bantam buff brahmas, 2 golden comets, and a rabbit for $55.

All in all these are very good birds. Not uncommon, Very sweet. Very good egg layers. Very hardy. My favorite chicken next to the Australorp.

They don't go broody alot which is good if you want them for egg laying, but for hatching it's pretty hard at least in my

Our best layers so far have been the Leghorns and the Easter Eggers. Trouble with the Leghorns is if they free range they have no camouflage. Also, once warm weather hits they love to sleep in trees which in turn makes all the other chickens want to sleep in trees. That worries me. Our Easter Eggers lay almost every single day but this past fall they took a much longer than normal break after their molt. The eggs are medium sized. I could never get them to be friendly with me. I gotta say they are also the smartest (or maybe they are just the most skittish) because out of all the chickens we've had these ladies have managed to elude the foxes, raccoons, and coyotes the longest. Buff Orpington's were broody. I loved our Speckled Sussex - they were friendly and good layers but our Barred Plymouths were very aggressive towards them. Maybe the Speckled Sussex are TOO sweet. I think the Golden Comets are a good bet. Tractor Supply will mail 10 chickens for $31.79 (that includes shipping). You have to pick them up at the post office within 24 hours.
