Hello All,
I've been around Backyard Chickens for a couple of years (invaluable when I first started out)t and have been raising poultry for a number of years. I started out with two hens kept, I thought, legally in Fort Wayne. I remember there was an ordinance that stated chickens could be kept in a coop no more than 50 ft to the nearest dwelling. I remember measuring off my yard and being relieved to have 4 feet to place a coop in. I never had issues with my neighbors (they loved my two sweet girls). I lived at that time in old FW (near South Side). Anyway, the bug set in and I ended up moving to a rural property in another county. Then, a year ago a job transfer sent me to a slightly larger city south of FW (Louisville). Now, like many progressively, growing cities throughout the US, Urban Homesteading is a big deal in this new city of mine. Chickens and bees are naturally a part of that movement. Legislation encourages backyard Chicken keepers.
The reason I am interested in FW, per say, is that I still own rental property and have family in the Fort. I really want my tenants to be able to keep chickens if they like, but openly without fear of Fort's archaic laws. Further, with the state of the economy, one never knows where they may end up and the house is paid for. Fort Wayne has very rigid leadership. They are not visionaries by any means. I know because, not only did I grow up there, I worked for the city once upon a time. I am extremely interested in revitalizing Fort Wayne and, if you go by successful models, urban farming has improved countless cities across the US. Fort Wayne needs a push in a BIG way!
I heard that there is a group dedicated to changing the ordinance in FW? Does any one know about this group and how I can contact them. I would like to join forces with them. I know there are folks pushing the urban gardening thing and are supporters of the backyard chicken group, but I haven't been able to find them. If I can't find them, would any one on here from Fort Wayne be interested in starting a local FW group to get the dumb law changed? I have lots of ammo from KY!
