Chick Days at Tractor Supply....

I'm hatching my own but I still want silkies. I find them, raise them for a few weeks and sell them for $10 ea. I do good and I'm able to put money back into my own chickens. I think I am going to order fancier chickens though. I have Cochin, Barred Rock, De Uccle and Oprhingtons. I want different looking ones.

The whole selling chickens to help with the cost of your other chickens is a great idea. However, I have a problem selling chickens, even if I get them for that.

I am so glad I found this, I have 16 in my incubator now due Monday/Tuesday but I would love to get some breeds that I don't have. All mine are barnyard mutts. I am really wanting some tinted egg layers.

I have 12 birds coming from eFowl, I got GLW, barred rocks, and Easter eggers. Well actually there's 20 coming, but 12 are mine. I want Cochins and buff orpingtons, so my TSC trips will be eventful. Hopefully..

I do have a hard time selling them too....that is how I ended up keeping 70 last year. This winter I lost most to a hawk. Never had a problem all spring and summer but winter they were snached. I have hatched many that will be going into the coop as soon as weather is warm. The silkies I think of as a business., they are the designer chicken and everyone wants them. I drive around on Wed's to the TS stores and snatch them all up. It makes it easier letting them go because my own chickens have yet to accept them and I've tried many many times.

I have my chicks all planned out this year and they'll all be arriving, picked-up, and hatched in the first week of May. I tried to learn from my mistakes last year and want to raise them in one group. I'm scared to go to TSC during chick days because somehow I end up looking into those tubs and throwing all my plans out the window! LOL

I thought chick days usually start in march/april usually?

Well, Feb 27 is pretty darn close to March.

According to the TSC website, the rest of the stores will up and running by March 3. Let's face it, with the thousand stores the corporation operates, there has to be a rolling opening.

The "Days" will continue right on through March and April. It's headache for the stores. The help normally grows pretty weary of it after a month or two. But this promotion drives a lot of customer traffic and that is the real point. The profit on the chick sales themselves is tiny and the Days are probably a virtual loss leader.
