My son and I have both witnessed a couple of our 3 week old poults "strutting" like a big tom. This is my first time raising poults. This may seem normal to some of you veterans, but doesn't this seem a bit early for them to behave like this? It's so funny to watch because they'll bring their wings way down, walk a bit, and then shake a little.
Is this normal?

From Nava : this guy turned out to be a tom, and the first time he did his strout was at 9 days, later on I cought it with a camera here he is

Sounds like our baby turkeys too. I'd say it's pretty normal. Turkeys are really funny, personable, and inquisitive. Much more entertaining than baby chickens. Even the females will strut at that age just showing dominance.

Though both sexes will display, only the male poults are persistent about it (chest butting one another is cute until about three months when the blood starts to flow.).. This one is apparently (one year on) a terror to visitor's cars at the home of the folks we gave him to: This wannabe jenny (not yet 6 months) only challenged her mother when she could get on the opposite side of a fence - jennies/hens usually display for specific/time limited reasons - jakes/toms? It is more than enough reason that they simply can...

Oh my goodness those are great pictures! Thank you so much. I'm glad that I'm not going crazy here. haha!

Well, no sooner did you ask about this than our three week old started strutting today. We took them out for their first romp around the yard and this was the only one doing this. He also kept calling everyone together and almost herding them at times. It was so amusing to watch so I took out the phone camera and snapped a couple of pics.

I saw a young one doing this one day, as soon as he started Mom went into a full display as well. She went as far as thrumming and even did a few week gobbles!!

Blew everything I ever thought I know about turkeys completely out of the water!! It was like she was trying to teach her young tom what will be expected of him, or maybe reminding him she is still the Mom & he better behave! Ether way it was just tooo funny seeing a hen all puffed out & gobbling like a tom!!
