We have had so much rain lately and my chickens run is a muddy mess! We used to have grass but the chickens ate it all so is there something I can put down to help? Or WOULD it help? I don't see how this muddy, soppy wet ground could be good for them but I'm not an expert. HELP PLEASE?

I have a covered run with wood chip so it never gets wet, some people use gravel, I agree a muddy run isn't great for them, make sure it is covered from the elements.

It happens.. Hopefully the weather will change and dry it up some for you. We had this issue last fall and switched runs. I found with two runs it was easier to give each run a break and a chance to regrow grass. Planting grass while the chickens are still on the area would be pointless. They will eat the seeds. Last year we helped our run dry up with a ton of leaves. We just dumped all of our fallen tree leaves to use as mulch for our chicken run.

Soaked up a lot of the wetness, and helped a ton with the smell of wet mud and poop! I don't have before pictures. Just imagine it being really gross and wet. We had to wear full rubber boots when going into the run.

Thank you. Leaves are a great idea. I had thought about mulch maybe. Thanks for your help. Thought maybe my chickens were the only ones that couldn't keep grass in their yard. lol Yes I have been wearing full rubber boots also to keep from sinking in the mud. Thank you!

Yes thank you. Their actual coop with a small run is covered and stays dry for the most part, however I leave their door open and let them out into a larger enclosed run during the day. That is where the mud issue is. Thank you for your help:)

They love mulch, but it is quite expensive. Leaves are free and it's a good way to get rid of excess leaves.

Mulch...Look for it at your local dump or recycling yard. By me it is free and as much as you want as long as you load it yourself. If you have the loader do it it's only $5.
