My new baby chick (shes about 3-7 days old) has developed this big lump to the side of her neck and is plucking her feather out on it. She had it when I got her 3 days ago but now its getting bigger - almost the same size as her head!
Its off to one side and I cant seem to move it around and its pretty hard so I'm a bit unsure if its her crop or not?
I must admit I was a bad mumma and was giving her sesame seeds and letting her eat whatever she found in the backyard when i was doing introductions to my other hens on her first day and im worried she hasnt digested it all properly.
I've got her on a strict water and chick crumble diet, now that i realised my mistake. Just hope my ignorance wont cause her any harm :( Help??

Has it been like this since she was out in the backyard? Is she eating, drinking and pooping O.K?

The crop should be big sometimes but it also should be flattened in the early morning. If it's staying large, the chick might have eaten something that bound or cannot pass. If so, you'll need to intervene or the poor thing won't make it.

its smaller today thank gosh but its not flat at any time of day. Shes eating drinking and pooping like always. How do i intervene? Its also squishy now that its gotten smaller. I bought her at a day or two old and shes always had the lump but for 2 days its got realllly big but now its small again. Confusing lil chickadee

Its a bit weird to see but basically the bulge on her right side is what im talking about. These pics were taken when it was at its biggest but its now about half the size but still there. kind of feels like its full of sand or grit?

Glad to hear it's not an impacted crop. I think lots of new chick keepers have this concern because it can look awful when a tiny chick stuffs itself. I don't think any feathers are missing -- they are just spread out.
