Hi I'm wondering if it would stop digging predators to bury chicken wire around run? I will use hardware cloth on walls, but if I can save money I would rather not bury it! Any suggestions? Thank you

I think chicken wire is pretty flemsy and not good for long-term protection. I find Hardware cloth hard to work with.. . . So I adapted and use 2x4 welded wire.. . Its a little more sturdy. . . but that wont keep out small varmits

I buried hardware cloth for the reason stated above. I have a friend who didn't bury, but laid scrap chain link pieces around the perimeter of his run. He lives out in the boonies, so I know he has more varmints that I do and it is working well for him.
Chicken wire seems to be well-suited for keeping chickens out of things, but not for protecting chickens. I used 2 x 4 welded wire to lay on the ground as an apron around the run.

Thank you all for the help! Looks like I will bury the better fence... Better not to take any risks, I love those little chookie babies!!

We're looking into switching from chicken wire when we build our new chicken run, when it comes to burying fencing how long does it last before it rusts through and falls apart and needs replaced? I'd imagine something like 2x4 welded wire lasts a while, but does anybody have a good estimate of how often you might need to replace it?

you don't need to bury it just bend the wire into an L shape and lay on ground. Leave about 1-2 ft flat on the ground and stake into ground with landscape stakes and cover with dirt. i live in the country and have had no issues with critters getting in.

Yeah, that's what we did with our chicken wire this year. We're also considering going and getting a few truckloads of river rock since it's just laying around all over North Idaho and doing a nice 2 foot underground rock wall to keep the coyotes out.
We used hard ware cloth. We couldn't bury it because of the drought the ground was to hard. So we made it like and L shape and covered it with sand. So far no predators have got in. I had one spot that they tried to dig under but as soon as they hit the hard ware cloth they stopped.I have about 6 inches all the way around my run. And putting the sand on top of the cloth lets me know what predator is trying to get in. They leave their foot prints in the sand!
