I am going to be ordering some new chicks this spring to add to our flock. And since we had to take out our old rooster I would like to get a new one. The one we had before was a Barred Rock and he was great til he started to get older and then started attacking us. That's why we had to get ride of him.

I'm trying to find a breed that the roosters tend to be more docile. I realize that there will be variations of personalities but I know some tend to be more aggressive than others. I was really happy with the Barred Rock, but I'm looking for advice on other breeds.

Should I stick with the Barred Rocks or try another breed? The hens we have now are Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks.

I've had my fair share of breeds and have gotten attacked by varieties of rocks.

IMHO, the very best I've had is Black Penedesenca. They are very protective with predators but don't want contact with humans. They are very respectful of fences and stay inside virtually any type of netting or fence. I keep a flock of cockerels in a 2' fence and they never go over.
I can't imagine ever getting flogged by one. They're just not that into you. I think those that warm up to people are those that are likely to attack.
Your only challenge will be to find any. They're extremely rare.

This partridge rock flogged me two days in a row and was dinner the third day.

Since you're in Montana, a couple others to consider are Jaerhon or Chantecler.

Wow, gorgeous roosters you have there, ChickenCanoe!

We only have a SS Hamburg cockerel right now, and I love him. I don't think you could call him docile though.

Re-evaluate if you really need a rooster. What would his purpose be?

I think chickencanoe really hit it about birds not wanting contact with humans being the best roosters. Roosters aren't pets and those that are raised as such lose all respect for people and will be much more likely to attack. If you're wanting a pet, stay with hens. If you're wanting livestock, then look into a rooster. But you need to understand what his purpose is to be to select an appropriate breed.

I had a French Copper Maran that was very calm.
The Barred Rock was good with me but was becoming bad with people coming to my door. So sadly I gave him away.
I had a Crested Polish that was attaching me ! So for the first time I was happy when the fox took him....

Thanks for the ideas on the breeds. I will look into all of them.

And I don't want a pet I want a rooster to protect my 21, and soon to be more hens. And in time to give his contribution to the next generation.
But I cannot put up with a rooster attacking us or possibly hurting someone that comes over.
Our old rooster would sneak up behind us and spur us in the back of our legs.
I have heard that some breeds tend to have more aggressive roosters so i'm looking to avoid those.
Thanks for the ideas i will look up the breeds that have been mentioned.

I got a French Blue Copper Maran from a breeder assortment and he become a little over protective and human aggressive around 8-9 months. After reading up on them I realized that is pretty common for that breed. Gorgeous rooster and amazing guy to his hens, I mean AMAZING, but not safe with to have running around in the yard with kids. When I have to start looking over my shoulder, it's just not fun anymore.

That is the exact experience I had with my rooster. He was awesome with the girls! But at about the same age you mentioned he started coming after us.
