Hi all,

Just thought I'd share some photos of my cheap and hastily build incubator, I made last summer... Hastily built because a friend gave me some eggs and...

I made this over a weekend, basically using stuff I had laying around the house and workshop... Bought the thermostat and hygrometer... The "box" is made from a 2'' thick styrofoam board and duct tape.

Just for the record... I had an 100% sucess hatch, on all fertile eggs (candled on day 7)... Eggs tilted 4 times/day... 40% and 70% humidity.

Obs: Measures marked on the photos are in centimeters.

Please note the new generation hi-tech door latch...

Daedalus62, Nice build! I bet that incubator holds temperature very well. I love your latching mechanism!

Many sleepless nights, engineering those latches...

Thanks, lazy gardener !

Yes... It does keep temperature pretty well, even though I kept all the vent holes (5 low in the front and another 5 in the top rear) open all the time... I prefer plenty of oxygen inside there, over some temperature loss.

That is cool. Simple but well executed. In retrospect, is there anything you would do differently if you were building it again?

Thanks, WalnutHill !

No, everything worked fine ("mechanically" and "ergonomically")... Well, almost... The only thing I'm gonna do is stick some more duct tape all over the bottom and those blue foam "uprights"... It gets pretty messy (and styrofoam is hard to clean!) when the chicks hatch.

This is so neat!
Greeat job!
Where did you get the styrofoam panels?

Thanks, Joshua G !

I got a big panel, over at our (Portugal/Europe) equivalent to your Home Depot, that I cut to size.

Genius!! I'm trying to make my first incubator as I just added a rooster so now have fertilized eggs and am curious as to what might show up. And if it prooves not crazy difficult/time consuming or to repeat with other eggs that I have acess to. I wonder if I could repurpose a big Styrofoam cooler or use another cooler as an incubator?
