I have two pair of mandarin ducks and this is the first year laying. they are together so I don't know which hen is laying but is laying in the swiming pool. Does this mean she is not going to sit. This is the second egg. One on the wire and one in the pond. She has two nesting boxes in her pen but another box they sleep in. My pen is not super big but sufficent room for them. have better plans but did not want to disturb them since its breeding season. One pair will be a year this summer and the other pair the hen is 2 did not have a mate for her until last fall. So first year for her as a two year old. Do they usually lay eggs in the water when they first start laying?

They just lay eggs wherever they happen to be at the time until they get ready to sit. You can try retrieving the eggs from the pool each morning and put them in a nest. In many cases captivity has bred any broodiness out of a lot of them and you will have to find a broody hen to put them under or get an incubator. I have some that will lay and hatch in a wood duck type nest box. Others just lay eggs here and there with no interest at all in it.

Thank you.. No egg this morning but she was checking out the nesting box. I do have 2 wood duck/Mandarin duck nesting boxes in the pen. So hopefully. I kept the egg and place it in the box . I don't know if its good since it was soaking a while but put it in there anyways.
