Sad - 3/4 chicks dead in Meyer shipment

I am so sorry about your loss. I ordered 9 (3 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Barred Rocks) from Meyer that shipped on Monday. I picked them up at the PO yesterday afternoon. All nine survived and seem to be thriving. One of the orpintons had a touch of pasty butt, but that was easily taken care of.

The box was smaller than what I have seen larger batches shipped in and they seemed packed in pretty tight with a heating pad.

We are heartbroken. I hope the replacement shipment is OK. Our little survivor barely woke.. slept almost constantly and was very wobbly on her feet. Then stopped walking altogether. Didn't want to eat or drink.. so whatever happened to the others obviously caused her death as well, it was just delayed.

Meyer has Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks hatching on Monday, so we will get our replacements on Tuesday. We added in a meal maker to make it a shipment of 5. Anxiously waiting for them to get here, with Sav-a-chick in hand (and probiotics).

I hope they all show up alive and well. Keep us posted. Those are two of the 4 breeds I ordered along with a Meyer's mark. My barred rock was the one that survived.

It may not have been anything with the hatchery. May have had something happen in shipping.

It probably was something in shipping. We are sad. The box was quite small - the chicks were placed in a straw lined nest with a heat pack. I think they got too cold or hot in shipping. The one that initially survived was probably just too damaged to survive. Poor baby.

Are you getting a replacement shipment, Krystle? Ours will show up on Tuesday or Wednesday. I hope for a much better outcome.

Yes, I want a replacement but they told me to wait and call back Friday in case my surviving chick doesn't make it.

It is a good idea to wait. I thought our survivor was OK until about 5 hours later. She never did run around and eat or drink, though. She was wobbly and then stopped being able to walk. I really hope your little survivor makes it!
