My chicken sang the egg song!

The brightness will help them make eggs but it may be preventing them laying the egg as they do like their privacy maybe staple old tea towels over the entrances of the nest boxes. this will also prevent all hens going broody at the same time as they wont be able to see the broody being broody all the time!

why else do chickens sing the egg song? i heard mine do it about 2 months ago and she's only about 15 weeks old now, no eggs yet.

My OE pullet, who laid her first egg as couple of days ago, sang an extended egg song twice this morning, but didn't lay an egg. My BSL did though. Maybe she was announcing for her?

She looks like an English game hen I had once. My BSL's red around the head and neck isn't nearly as predominant. She is a beauty.

Thanks! Her "sister" is like you describe, black with some duller red around her collar. They were both solid black as chicks and this one just sprouted all kinds of color. I take it it's rare-ish for a BSL to have THIS much color. :)

Question, I have clay eggs in the nest boxes, and three of my hens are laying. Today one went into the nest box and just sat on the clay egg. I left her alone waited for her to come out, and when she did I went to get the egg. She didn't lay an egg, and the clay egg was warm. Don't think she's broody. Should I take the clay eggs out of the boxes?
