Egg selling

Has it been mentioned that chickens are not egg machines?

They will slow down due to age, season, weather, mood, stress, molting cycle... sometime complete stop. How to factor that into your cost...

You only keep hens for two years. Cost of raising replacements is factored in, as is any money made selling the adult birds.

Walking,

Whom do you sell your "spent" chickens to? And how do you find them?

Craigslist, all the way. I list spent hens on CL for $8-$10 each depending on the breed/condition of the hen, and they go FAST.

I sold my entire flock on CL this year. Some people took 20+ birds and some took three, but 150 birds ages 18 weeks to three years were sold in nine days. $5 for hens older than two years, $8 for hens under two years, $15 for pullets at point of lay. I could have gotten $8 for spent hens and $10 for younger hens, but I wanted those chickens to go fast. Several people gave me $10 per hen because that was the going rate for the birds and they didn't want to bother waiting for change.

I even sold my entire pen of cockerels for $3 each, and I'd expected to have to eat them.

Good info. Thanks Walking. Did the buyers ever tell you their plans with the birds?

The spent birds are obviously not economically viable for egg production and I heard that other than soup, the meat is not good eating.

Selling eggs?

I plan to keep 15 hens over winter. I hope to get enough eggs for myself and enough chicks to not have to buy any next spring. I would try and sell them, but I am sure not going to plan on a profit.

I keep the chickens for my enjoyment, entertainment, and to eat. They also give my retired life meaning. They keep me busy. I should be paying the chickens for all the good they do me.

But I have a question for you egg sellers, wash them, sand them, or not clean them at all?
