I put some hay in my chickens nest box and the next morning I look in the coop and the hens are on the floor of the coop and the hay had been moved out of the nest box into the main area.. What does this mean??

Maybe that's where they wanted their nest, or if they aren't laying yet, it might have been just something to do. If they are new to laying, odd things are likely to happen for a month or so, including odd eggs. If they are laying, you could try putting golf balls or some other form of fake eggs in there. Also, you might arrange the hay a little, into a sort of scooped out place.

Mine are doing the same thing! My coop is too small and they are not able to all get on the roost, so they sleep on the floor. They are starting their 19th week and are not yet laying eggs. Their "voices" have changed and they are sounding more like adult chickens, so I'm expecting them to start laying fairly soon. We are frantically finishing a new, much larger coop and run for them and I sort of hope they hold off until we get them moved and settled in. I hope it is finished before this weekend. Mine all checked the nesting boxes out. I even put a fake egg in each one, but they must have played soccer with them, because I found one in the bottom of the main coop and the other at the far end of the run! There hasn't been any squatting or chicken song yet, so I'm just putting up with the nonsense and trying to be patient with them.

Yeah I had a smaller nesting box till I noticed they share them the box together so I built a bigger on big enough for 2 and they still sleep on the floor or one stands up in it and one sits down.
