I searched all of the Web and this forum to see if I was crazy and found nothing but my chickens seem to love taking a 5 min sunbath ...they find a good spot with sun and lift a wing up and lay on their side ...The first time I saw my girls do this I had a heart attack and thought something was really wrong and ran over ..they immediately got up and was fine ..whew ...I was thinking that maybe with our weather changing that they were trying to get some heat under their wings to warm up a lil ( it's not that cold yet) and trap it for the cooler nights ....I think ..I was wondering if anyone else's chickens do this and if my assumption is correct ..they have plenty of shade and only some sun beams thru the trees so it does seem deliberate

Yep, they sunbathe! Totally normal. It is really alarming when you see them do it for the first time and aren't sure what's going on.

Yep, mine love to sun bake ... totally freaked me out too the first time I saw one of them lying on the lawn!

Funnily enough my black hens sun bake more that the lighter coloured hens.

Awww thanks ...it was so upsetting at first but now it's cute ...what's funny is if ones does it they all seem to flock together and bask ...and being a beach sun girl myself ..I understand the need lol

Mine all love to sun bake, including the rooster!

It's so funny to go out to the coop, only to find them all lying, stretched out in the sun, like they have all gone to sleep. It even takes a minute to rouse them as they are so relaxed!

They love a good dust bath too. I have a couple of girls who will almost bury themselves in dirt

They really are a joy to watch!

Chickens are drawn to bask in the sun because their feathers absorb vitamin D just has our skin does. This is especially important for laying hens since vitamin D helps their bodies utilize calcium.

That aside, it certainly is adorable.
