I now only have a roo and hen, will they survive winter or should i get more hens to keep them warm? also, can press charges against my landlord? was his dog that chewed through the fence, he didnt even eat them, he just broke their necks, no missing feet, legs, wings ect.

I'd be very wary of shooting the landlord's dog. Who knows where that kind of bad blood could lead. While tenants do have rights depending on the area a ticked off landlord could make things very hard.

Have you talked to your landlord about this yet? What does he/she have to say?

I would look in to getting a few more chickens, especially if your area is particularly cold.

! I'm so sorry for your loss. Firstly I'd definitely try talking to then and see if you can reach an accord. I'd definitely be expecting him to at the LEAST replace the chickens and take measures to prevent his dog from getting loose again. I'm not sure about suing, but if you chose that route be aware he could try and retaliate and make you move. Again, ss for your loss. I hope you can sort things by talking.

He told me after it happened its my fault for not noticing that they were being attacked, and i was allowed chickens so that i could give him eggs, so he told me to get over it, im so heart broken, i hand raised them from when they hatched :( but i do live in west michigan and get pretty harsh winters i'll get a few hens to keep the two i still have ugh i now have a 2ft tall metal wire fencing to make a bottem lineing that will hopefully keep the hound out, he didnt dig, he chewed through the chicken wire, thank you for your thoughts

i burried the ones that died very deep so that animals wont dig them up, i still remember the dog walking up to my door with a hen in is mouth :"(, happend just a few days ago feels so long and yet not so long, im trying to not hate the dog, dogs do what dogs do just i can't help but be so angry with that dog

I would get some more hens, find a discreet way to get rid of the dog, and REFUSE to give the landlord so much as a single egg. Its not your fault he let his dog wander around unchecked and kill your chickens. Sorry for your loss.

I want to slap your landlord upside the head!I would definitely NOT be giving him more eggs. Perhaps you could report the dog to the council? I'd be keeping a record of any incidents with his dog, including past ones. Also keep a record of what the landlord says if it's nasty etc. You need things like that for court or the residents court. As for the dog, it's probably worth looking into deterrents. Ie dog whistle? I feel for you. I had a fox attack my girls right in front of me a few days ago and it's such a traumatic thing. Whilst researching fox proofing I came across an ultrasonic device. It said that it may effect dogs, so that may be worth a look? Maybe you could rig up some kind of alarm? Best of luck xxoo

Sadly the only way i an have any chickens is if i give him eggs, otherwise he told me i couldnt have them blah, he is a very rough landlord, but i love the property, out in the country, however i am going to be looking for a new house, i feel so much safer giving my own grown eggs to my family but wont have the chickens in danger again, i like the ee's so im going to stick with them however my run and coop are pretty deep in the ground so i dont think i can just move it, im going to have to make another coop, any suggestions as to where to get them? i've looked online and not many hens/pullets are availble, anyone in michigan know of somehere to get not to expensive hens please let me know

What wire have you used in the construction of your run? Rather than moving the entire setup, you may be able to simply fortify the current structure(s) in a way that will prevent future break-ins. The fact that this dog was able to get in means that other predators will be just as capable, so even if you were able to eliminate the dog as a threat you would still have the risk of future losses.

I would discretely and permanently deal with the dog and bill the landlord for loses if he refuses to pay withhold rent when he sues for rent counter sue, If you go this route be ready to move." Deal with it" would not be a response I could work with.
