Gun Advice - Please.

"I have not found 12 ga shells anywhere near 7 bucks.. Is that target loads or seconds?

I think the last ones I bout were around 15 bucks.

I went and looked online and found all shotgun shells around the same price.

And talking about prices, What about the inability to find 22s and what a box costs? .....wow"

Drive down 169 to the Rogers Cabelas. 5.99 per box for various target load. Even steel shot was under $12. You just need to shop a bit smarter. But yeah, .22 shells are a bit ridiculous. Cabelas and Gander both have them but prices are nuts. Starting to creep down though.

LOL I KNOW!!!!

We have a ammo plant not too far from here. Seconds are offered to employees, they are slightly blemished or over runs. They are harder to get than they use to be. You need to "know" someone to get them.

I do not use target loads. I prefer the higher brass. I had trouble with target load brass cracking especially when reloaded. I do a lot of bird hunting and prefer the extra reach and load.

I have started "plinking" with my 17 just because of the price of 22s. Makes no sense how such a small cheap load can be so scarce and expensive. BTW the 17 can really reach out and nail an nasty little fur bearing critter. The downfall it has is the noise. My son has one in SD where is legal to have a silencer on them which makes them a great rifle. Here in Minnesota they are illegal. ( to get a silencer from what I understand you need a federal permit. No idea for sure, cannot have one here.

In looking at your requirements I can recommend the same route I'm going. .44mag Marlin lever gun with a matching .44mag single action Ruger six gun. The .44mag Marlin carries the same (close) velocity out of a 22" barrel as a 30.06. With those two weapons you carry one type of ammo. Military here also so I worry about ammo weight and which weapons I carry. The lever gun is good out to 100+yds for deer up to and including Mule Deer. It'll also stop a 400lb boar in his tracks if you know where and how to hit it. As far as bear goes a .44mag does some terrible damage out of the long gun and if it gets close the Ruger is accurate and reliable and just as damaging. Two weapons, one ammo, both of which are large caliber.

Just for reference I owned a .41mag Ruger Blackhawk years ago that my grandfather gave me (it was stolen in a house robbery after I'd been shooting it for 20+ years) and I could draw that thing and hip fire it and hit a soup can at 10yds 8 out of 10 times. The one time I fired at a charging pig with that pistol (I was 100% surprised when it came out of the brush!!) I hip shot it in the snout at 15 feet and the top of its head came off. No matter what you buy make sure and practice practice practice. A great gun in the hands of the unskilled is just a piece of iron and wood. In the hands of the skilled it's a precise instrument.

44mag lever would be my choice for only one gun. those rounds back a punch and get distance even in a six-gun. if you are comfortable with the functionality of guns check your local gun boards you might find a decent used one. if you go with a handgun in this as well do NOT get a light one, it will kick like a mule. i would also recomend if you can afford it get a cheap little 22 rifle or decent 22 pistol for small game/varments and hog dispatch (~$100 for rifle around here). I would also say i have a strick rule of NO to Jennings, bryco, or hi-point i personally dont trust them.

For ammo, Walmart has for the most part held their prices very competitive to pre-scare prices as has Bass Pro, Dick's and a few other big chains, can't say the same many other ammo vendors especially the smaller ones...

I saw the ammo shortage coming and was proactive on my purchases, so for me the inflated cost are not an issue right now...

Around me the only ammo not always in stock at Walmart is 22LR, but they do regularly get it in, you just have to play the game and be there when it arrives... Around me all the 24/7 Walmart start unloading and stocking their shelves at 10PM (ammo delivery days vary by store, get friendly with the sporting goods guy/gal and learn your stores ammo day)... The ammo is taken off the truck and put in a lock box in the back of the store, only the manager or the sporting goods guy has the key to bring it to the floor, so it's best to get friendly with both as they can help you out and bring it out for sale once it arrives...

I can guarantee that within a few weeks time and a few 11pm-midnight visits to my 3 local Walmarts I can score even 22lr at normal prices, as I was even doing it at the height of the shortage last year...
