It has been raining almost constantly for the past 36 hours here and this morning I found an egg in a mud puddle outside. I am not sure how long its been there. Do you think its OK to just wash it off and eat it? or could yucky stuff soak in through the shell and make it bad?

Cooking thoroughly would probably kill all the yucky things that would have seeped in just a few hours.

You could probably cook and feed them back to the chickens. There's certainly no pathogen in there that they haven't already picked up drinking out of the mud puddles.

I agree that cooking would probably help make the egg safe, but I personally would just throw it out. I get plenty of other eggs so that keeping a doubtful egg would not be a good idea. If the egg is cracked, I throw it out. If I'm not sure what conditions it's been kept in (like a mud puddle), then I'd throw it out.
Temperature is important. If the water was warmer than the egg, no problem. Unfortunately, it's probably been the other way around, which means the impurities flowed from cooler to warmer areas - inside the egg. Throw it out!

I would feed it back to the birds!
If you do feed it back to the birds, be sure to crack the egg open and feed egg and shells separately. You don't want to encourage egg eaters to develop! That's what I do and I haven't had an egg eating problem to date.
I've just crushed up the eggs for years. They don't associate the crushed mess with the nice round eggs, regardless of how you serve it. When I first started with chickens, this was a big concern of mine, a BYCer told me not to worry since so few chickens are Mensa level

Eggs are permeable. Sitting in a mud puddle is about the worst place they can be. We tried keeping the eggs our ducks left in places like this, but they were almost always bad when we opened them - weird green color. Now if we're not sure (IE, they're not still hot), and they're in the water, they get chucked.

Like CT said, compost is a good choice too.

Ha ha! Compared to some people I know, my chickens ARE Mensa level! Cute post. I agree about the eggs too. As long as the egg is not just tossed back into the run for them to discover and peck at, it should be alright. I've seen mine eat shelless eggs, but never one with a shell.
