anyone own this 10 roll out nest?

Went to the website...wish they had better pics, hard to see how the eggs are protected or how you access them.
Also how the nest insert looks and whether it's removable for cleaning.

7" high opening does seem kind of small....but might be OK depending on inside clearances.
 
The inside is deeper than the 7" tall entry hole it's closer to 1'.

I checked my local supply stores and they have the plastic mountable type and the front hole on those really don't look that much bigger.
 
Yeah. It would be assembled all the way too had they not neglected to send the right parts!
I'll have to measure the inside clearances when I get a chance.
The plastic tray which includes the egg holder in the front inserts from the back and then you mount it against a wall. Theres also a plastic turf pad that you put in the bottom of it. The egg tray part is covered with a rubber shield. I really hope it works for a 7lb hen! That model doesn't look extremely diff than the big bird model mostly the opening.
When they say big bird I hope they mean the 9lb giants!

OK. So the opening is 7" tall by 11" wide. The inner box is about 1 foot by 1 foot. It has a slope to allow the eggs to roll into the covered egg tray up front.
Two Questions:
1. Do you think a 7 lb hen will have any issues fitting this?
2. Will I need to build some sort of steps for them to reach both tiers of nest boxes you think?

Well, I order pullets this Feb so I find out for sure then!





 
I think they'll be able to fit in there OK, might be a squeeze for a larger bird...only time will tell for sure.

Have you played with rolling an egg around in the nest and into the trough?
The trough cover looks a little flimsy, is it hard to access the eggs in the trough?
 
The breed is supposed to get up to 7lbs I believe which is the medium side of larger bird?

I don't have any ceramic eggs to test it with right now. The cover is a clear rubber. I think it will be ok on removing eggs from front. It's actually one single tray that inserts from the back. It sits inside at an angle.

I'll keep ya posted as things progress and see if they take to it. I'm probably going to come up with some steps or something to make sure they can get to the roost part of the nest boxes.


(Oh and I have nest pads that will be inserted in the trays. They are a fake grass looking pad. I guess its suppose to get keep the eggs from breaking and are removable for cleaning.)
