Broad Winged Hawk Attacked Buff Brahma

I'm very sorry. It would be uncommon for a hawk to attack a Brahma, but not impossible. I would think it's possible with a large hawk. How awful!!!!!

I'm sorry for awakening an old, painful thread. I was thinking about getting a few Brahma to see if they would help against Hawks. Guess not.

I'm a physician, so this may or may not apply to chickens, but for humans, one day is to quick to get septic or even a recognizable infection. For humans, it takes about 3 days after a surgery before symptoms prompt thoughts of infection. Granted, this is after a sterile procedure, but overnight seems awfully quick. Blood loss, internal injury, and/or a punctured lunch are all suspect. I'm very sorry it happened and worry for our flock.

Thank you for letting us know that a giant chicken doesn't ward off a hawk. I'm hoping our 2 Great Pyrenees will protect them. They are still untested, though, but we have attempted to raise them as chicken guardians. Spring having sprung, we will be test soon, and starting our young flock free ranging. Right now they are in a 20 by 20 foot dog kennel with aviary netting keeping them save (and with 18 guineas keeping guard, too.

Damage to bird not consistent with a hawk or any sort, let alone a relatively small Broadwinged Hawk. Rapid development if infection I aggree consistent with what i have seen Damage much more consistent with that caused by a dog playing with chicken for a protracted length of time.
