A friend of ours hatched this bird - I think it was March of last year, if I'm remembering correctly. There were two Plymouth Rock roosters in with his Rhode Island Red hens, so our chicken is a cross between those breeds. Our friend gave it to us thinking it was a female... but it grew a giant comb and doesn't lay eggs! Probably not a hen! The thing is, this bird also doesn't crow, and doesn't have the large tail feathers that a rooster typically has. So we're not really sure what it is! S/he tends to be very submissive to the other chickens, and used to get picked on quite a bit... though in the past few months I catch him pecking back and standing up to the others a little more. Altogether we have 12 chickens. There is almost a dividing line down the center of his chest - one half is mostly brown, the other half is mottled with black and white. It almost looks like two different chickens from each side. Funny thing, though... it's really hard to get a picture of that spotted side - he really likes to keep that side facing away. Also - he has blue eyes. Well, a sort of a blue-grey. I don't know if that has anything to do with anything - I just never heard of a blue-eyed chicken before, lol.

As a side note, we named him Brienne (of Tarth, from Game of Thrones). This was when we thought she was a he (though he still may be). We thought she was a bit big, and a little odd, perhaps a bit mannish... hence the name! We wonder if Brienne is a mosaic or perhaps a chimera. Or we're just crazy, and this is a normal rooster that just doesn't crow.

If more pictures are needed, tell me what you'd like to see more of or better shots of, and I'll do my best to get them. He's skittish, so it can be challenging to get clear pictures of him.

**Edit**
I didn't think it worth mentioning, but we got 5 brown eggs yesterday, and we only have 4 brown layers. We thought someone laid twice in a day, because someone missed laying the day before... but today we got another 5 brown eggs! So could this bird with this giant comb be laying? Hmm... what do you think?

He is a gorgeous rooster!!! His parents were probably mixes as well, so when you mix two mixed breeds, you get interesting color blends. So don't worry, your chicken is quite normal!

As for the fact that he doesn't crow- some rooster will not crow if there is another rooster in the flock, to avoid confrontation. Some are also just shy. I have a rooster who has never crowed either.

I am in love with his color!!! Me want

Do you have other roosters, AtlantisPeeps? Brienne is our only rooster... unless he's the one laying that spare egg I found the past two days! I'm so confused at that, lol! I was just about positive that he is a he... ! Smh!

This is one super confusing looking chicken! Since this is your only "rooster", have you checked your egg yolks to see if your eggs are fertile? There's some good information here that can help you tell: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/16008/how-to-tell-a-fertile-vs-infertile-egg-pictures

From looking at the hackle feathers in pic 1, the saddle feathers in pic 2 and the overall shape in the last pic, I am convinced that it is a hen!

Right?? Thank you for that link - I'll keep an eye out. I haven't seen anything that looks fertilized... though I wasn't looking, and didn't know what to look for. But I do tend to look at my yolks, just because they're so clear an beautiful compared to store eggs!

To be honest, though, I really can't see this guy mounting anyone... he's so shy. Like I said, he's getting better, but the other chickens will definitely chase him around!

Oh and one more thing - if he's a she, and is laying that egg, she won't squat for me like the rest do!

There are a LOT more Brienne pictures in an album I made. I don't have a good handle on posting and such yet, so hopefully I can link to the album correctly... here.

Yes! I have 4 roosters. 3 crow, one does not. I also am confused about the lack of saddle feathers on your bird.... Strange. Could we get a picture of the legs? And if possible, a video of him walking and clucking (roosters walk and cluck differently than hens)
