A friend of ours hatched this bird - I think it was March of last year, if I'm remembering correctly. There were two Plymouth Rock roosters in with his Rhode Island Red hens, so our chicken is a cross between those breeds. Our friend gave it to us thinking it was a female... but it grew a giant comb and doesn't lay eggs! Probably not a hen! The thing is, this bird also doesn't crow, and doesn't have the large tail feathers that a rooster typically has. So we're not really sure what it is! S/he tends to be very submissive to the other chickens, and used to get picked on quite a bit... though in the past few months I catch him pecking back and standing up to the others a little more. Altogether we have 12 chickens. There is almost a dividing line down the center of his chest - one half is mostly brown, the other half is mottled with black and white. It almost looks like two different chickens from each side. Funny thing, though... it's really hard to get a picture of that spotted side - he really likes to keep that side facing away. Also - he has blue eyes. Well, a sort of a blue-grey. I don't know if that has anything to do with anything - I just never heard of a blue-eyed chicken before, lol.
As a side note, we named him Brienne (of Tarth, from Game of Thrones). This was when we thought she was a he (though he still may be). We thought she was a bit big, and a little odd, perhaps a bit mannish... hence the name! We wonder if Brienne is a mosaic or perhaps a chimera. Or we're just crazy, and this is a normal rooster that just doesn't crow.
If more pictures are needed, tell me what you'd like to see more of or better shots of, and I'll do my best to get them. He's skittish, so it can be challenging to get clear pictures of him.
**Edit**
I didn't think it worth mentioning, but we got 5 brown eggs yesterday, and we only have 4 brown layers. We thought someone laid twice in a day, because someone missed laying the day before... but today we got another 5 brown eggs! So could this bird with this giant comb be laying? Hmm... what do you think?
