Is this a rooster?

I'm very new to chickens...Is there any way I can keep pretending this chicken is a hen, or is it definitely a rooster? It is 9 weeks old and the "crow" comes in the last 5 seconds of the video below.


(Sorry for the bad picture quality through the screen. The chicks are hanging out in our makeshift "run" during the day while their outside coop and run is under construction)

In other news, is anyone in search of a beautiful, sweet Blue Orphington (I believe) rooster in the SF Bay Area or greater Sacramento area? My daughter bought him as a fertilized egg from a pumpkin patch farm and we hatched him in a homemade brooder. He is a lovely boy who has been held and loved on daily by my sweet four year old girl. This chicken is the love of her life and we are not able to keep roosters in our city. :-( She is going to be so devastated and I'd love to be able to tell her he's going to a great new home!

It's hard to tell through the netting, but I've never heard one of my hens sound like that. I'm not an expert, but sounds like a boy to me.

Oh dear, how to put this delicately.....

You could keep pretending that your chicken is a hen if you really want to.......but it's going to be a mighty long wait for that first egg!

That feeble little noise at the end was definitely a crowing attempt - I'm pretty sure it's a cockerel.

Thank you all! While I was hoping that someone might say, "Oh no! That is the infrequently heard sound a hen makes when it is trying to swallow a too-large bite of kale," or "That is the sound of a hen who is about to lay her first egg! Congratulations, you have an early bloomer!" I knew it was probably a rooster. *sigh*

This one is my daughter's rooster, Krista, I was just trying to be funny by pretending it was "in other news" that I needed to rehome a rooster because I knew it was a long shot that it was anything other than an attempt to crow I was hearing. I guess I'm glad I only have one to rehome rather than two! Still, this little girl is going to be so sad to give up her beloved Honey Baby Chicky!

I wish I could say that for you! I'm not an expert by any means, and since I can't actually see the bird's comb and wattles clearly, nor see it's feathering, I can only go on sound.

And that sounded like a big fat crow!

Oh, your poor daughter, she will probably be upset at having to give him up. I know I get attached to my feather-babies and I'm an adult - I understand why I can't keep them all. Perhaps you could try some form of diversion to keep her mind off it when he goes. I don't know, maybe something like.....some new chicks? Oh, the possibilities.......
